Kumanda: a remote that runs an LG TV from your iPhone

Kumanda controls an LG webOS TV on the same Wi-Fi from an iPhone. I built it with SwiftUI; it asks for no account and has no ads or tracking.

Highlights
  • iOS with SwiftUI
  • LG webOS control
  • No account, no tracking

Problem

When the physical remote goes missing, or you want to search for a channel, the phone is the handiest way to drive the TV. Existing apps often ask for an account, show ads and need a fiddly setup.

The goal was a simple remote that finds the TV by itself, needs no account, collects no personal data and shows channels in a readable way.

Solution

The app talks to the TV only on the local network, over LG webOS's connection ports. It scans for the TV, pairs on first connection and keeps the pairing key only on the phone.

  • Automatic discovery of the TV on the local network, with manual IP entry as a fallback
  • A full remote with arrows, volume, channel, home and menu
  • A channel list with channel logos and favorites
  • Listing of the TV's apps and input sources
  • Wake-on-LAN to turn the TV on remotely
  • Turkish and English interface

Result

Kumanda is open for testing on TestFlight. It asks for no account and collects no personal data, which I spell out on its privacy policy page.

  • A build with no accounts, ads, analytics or crash reporting
  • All communication stays on the local network and data stays on the device
  • Privacy policy and support pages are ready
