Clean Mac for Developers: a safe way to reclaim a developer's disk

On a developer's Mac, Xcode, Node and package caches quietly eat gigabytes. Clean Mac for Developers finds them, tells you how safe each one is and moves them to the Trash without deleting anything for good. I built it with SwiftUI.

Highlights
  • macOS with SwiftUI
  • Cleanup with safety levels
  • Moves to Trash, never deletes

Problem

Xcode DerivedData, simulators, node_modules, package manager caches and old versions can reach tens of gigabytes unnoticed. Cleaning by hand is tedious and risky: you have to know which folder is safe to remove.

The goal was an app that knows a developer's toolchain, shows clearly what is safe and cleans in a way you can undo.

Solution

The scanner walks the known cache locations in parallel and adds each item to the list live. Every item comes with a Safe, Caution or Warning badge and a short explanation. Instead of deleting, everything is moved to the Finder Trash.

  • Developer cache locations including Xcode, Node.js, Swift packages, Android SDK and Gradle, JetBrains and iOS backups
  • Safety levels and a protected path list; system folders are never cleaned
  • Quick Clean presets: Safe Only, Developer Set and Heavy Caches
  • Dry-run mode that shows what would happen without deleting
  • Custom paths, search and filtering
  • A history of cleanups and the total space reclaimed
  • A sandboxed build for the Mac App Store

Result

The app works, and the Mac App Store build is open for testing on TestFlight. I also set up the pipeline for direct distribution: a DMG, auto-update and a Homebrew Cask.

  • No permanent deletion: every action can be undone from the Trash
  • Scanning and safety logic backed by unit tests
  • Privacy policy and store copy are ready
